Lady Indians Soccer Earn Second Place in Tournament |
 |
|
Congratulations to the Girls Soccer Team! The Lady Indians soccer team traveled to DeSoto, Tx for a tournament this past weekend and came home with the second place trophy, losing to 5-A Garland in the final game. The girls played well throughout the weekend and had a great time, too. The girls beat teams from South Garland, Red Oak, Grand Prairie and Abilene Wylie to advance to the championship game.
Prior to their Saturday morning game, about the same time the service was being conducted to honor and remember Coach St. Clair, the girls did their own "final lap" along with some of the parents and family. During the walk they remembered some of the nicknames Coach St. Clair had called them and other "St. Clair moments." It was a fitting and loving tribute by the girls.

January Designated School Board Appreciation Month |
January 2011 is School Board Recognition Month and a good time to spotlight more than 7,000 men and women who serve our local schools and help promote public education. Santa Fe ISD will join other districts across the state to celebrate the countless contributions of these dedicated community leaders.
"Local school board members work tirelessly and devote hundreds of hours to lead our students to success. Setting aside time in January is one small way to celebrate their service to our community and say thanks for caring so much about the future of every child enrolled in our schools," said Patti Hanssard, Director of Public Relations.
"School board members shoulder critical responsibilities as advocates for our children. They face difficult challenges and make hard decisions with the overall goal of promoting school achievement. Working as a vital link between the community and the classroom, the board is responsible for an annual budget of $ 31.5 million, 4,500 students, 645 employees, and seven campuses. They serve as the passionate voice for public education and help ensure the future of our state and nation. We truly appreciate every board member for voluntarily tackling the enormous job of governing our local school districts," said Dr. Leigh Wall, Superintendent of Schools.
The board of trustees serving Santa Fe ISD will be honored at the January 17, 2011 school board meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Directions for Change of Traffic Flow at Kubacak |
Our campus improvements continue and the traffic flow for car rider drop off and pick up had changed at Kubacak. Effective Monday, 11/15, the traffic flow into Kubacak will be reversed. No vehicles will be allowed to enter the parking lot from Warpath. All cars will enter from the entrance on 6th Street across from the May Bruce library.
For student drop off and pickup the traffic will flow around the driveway so students enter/exit the school under the awning. All students need to exit their vehicles from the left side behind the driver. There will be Santa Fe ISD PD directing traffic before and after school. In the afternoon, walk-up car riders will be dismissed at 3:20 and drive through car riders will be dismissed at 3:30 to help ease the traffic flow. We appreciate your patience as we make this transition. Click to hear the callout message from Dr. Hernandez.

Congratulations to Lauren Miller, Morgan Aven, and Randi Davidson, who will represent Santa Fe in the All-Region Women's Choir; and Zachary Smith, Kendal McLaughlin, and Troy Minter, who will represent SFHS Choir at both the All-Region concert and at the Pre-Area auditions November 30th!
Four of our students have also been chosen for the All-Region Honor Choir: Tori Wilcoxson, DeLana Watson, Paul Henderson, and Jeffrey Cornelius will also perform on the Region Choir concert on November 13th.
All told,
more than 20% of the Santa Fe High School Choir Department will sing on the All-Region concert!
If you would like any information about the All-Region Choir concert or have any questions or kudos, you may contact Mr. Coffey at Santa Fe High School.
Let's all congratulate these talented and hardworking SFHS Choir students!

President Obama's Back-to-School Address |
On Sept 14, 2010, the President of the United States has scheduled his second annual address to school children regarding the importance of education for success in the workforce. His topic is expected be about persistence, responsibility, and the importance of achieving success in school. The address is planned to challenge students to work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning. He will also call for a shared responsibility and commitment on the part of students, parents, and educators in this endeavor. The broadcast is expected to occur at noon (EST) and can be accessed at the White House website at
www.whitehouse.gov
.
Just as last year, SFISD will not require or make arrangements to adjust school schedules for a live viewing of this event. However, a recording will be available to capture such events as resources, which may be used at a time when they fit the curriculum and individual teacher lesson planning. Therefore, teachers may elect to show portions of the recorded speech as appropriate within content standards, particularly at the secondary level. If any portion of the address is used, parents will be notified by the classroom teacher and offered the opportunity to decline participation. A meaningful alternate activity will be provided for any student who may opt out of this portion of a lesson. On the other hand, if a parent requests that their child view all or a portion of the address, we will make available an opportunity for students to participate in an educator supervised setting. Staff and parents who have questions about the address may view a summary on the U.S. Department of Education web site at
http://www.ed.gov
.

Junior High Hosts Student Created Holocaust Museum |
UPDATE: The Holocaust Museum is a very moving, powerful exhibit of student created artifacts. Thank you to all who have attended and supported our students. Watch for additonal photos of the exhibit as we will be posting them in an webpage album soon.
The Santa Fe Junior High Language Arts Department will host a student created Holocaust Museum on Thursday, March 25th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Santa Fe Junior High Library. An 8th grade student who completed a "Holocaust quilt," was very moved by the struggles of the Jewish people during WWII. "The Holocaust is the most powerful thing I've ever learned about," said Birkmeyer. "But, it has made me understand that power is not always a good thing if it hurts other."
Some of the items on display are six-foot towers, monuments, hand-made quilts, commemorative plates, original artwork and models that were crafted by eighth grade students for over a month.
"We chose the Holocaust because it was the kind of historical event that sparks interest in students," said Kristal Gage, a Language Arts Teacher, at Santa Fe Jr. High. "Throughout the nine week unit, they learned how to complete a research paper and project, but most importantly, they learned lessons that the Holocaust teaches everyone: the harmful effects of propaganda and prejudice."
The theme for the night will be "Power, Survival and Change," emphasizing how the Jews and Gypsies lost freedom so quickly, their struggles throughout the Holocaust, and how it has changed us today as a result.
While students may have dreaded the research at first, they completed their projects with pride and gained a new-found knowledge and understanding.

Fitnessgram |
FITNESSGRAM - FITNESS TESTING
In the 80th Legislative Session, Senate Bill 530 was passed, which requires fitness assessment for all students in grades 3 to 12 starting in the 2007-2008 school year. The Texas Education agency (TEA) identified FITNESSGRAM as the assessment tool to be used by all districts throughout the state. In order to be compliant with the law, Santa Fe ISD will complete FITNESSGRAM testing on all students grades 3-12 this spring.
FITNESSGRAM testing is very unique in that it does not compare students to students. It is not a test of athletic ability but a measure of student health and fitness. Each student tries their best to reach the "healthy fitness zone" which is determined by their age. The goal is to identify each student's health habits and needs. Our students will be encouraged to work on any area of needed improvement identified through the FITNESSGRAM assessment. The hope is that this will promote a lifelong health and fitness plan. The results of the FITNESSGRAM are kept confidential; however, a copy of your student's results will be made available to you upon request.
What is included in the FITNESSGRAM testing?
Aerobic Capacity Testing-a 20-meter pacer test (shuttle runs) or a timed one mile run
Body Composition-Height, Weight, and Percent Body Fat measurements
Abdominal Strength and Endurance-Curl Up Test (a form of sit ups)
Upper Body Strength and Endurance-Push Ups
Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility-Trunk Lift
Flexibility-Back Saver Sit and Reach or the Should Stretch
If you would like more information on FITNESSGRAM testing, you can go to the FITNESSGRAM website
www.
fitnessgram
.net/faqparents
to find more detailed information for both students and parents.
Specific FITNESSGRAM testing dates for each campus will be determined at a later date. Parents will be notified and it will be posted on this website. On the date that your child's school is scheduled for FITNESSGRAM testing, please make sure your child wears appropriate clothing and tennis shoes so they are prepared for the testing.

Ty Pennington and Extreme Makeover are Coming to Our Area |
We want to show ABC's "Extreme Makeover" what SFISD and the community of Santa Fe are all about.
Santa Fe High PALS support the "Extreme Makeover" in numerous ways. The SFHS PAL classes attended a Pep Rally for ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition--a house will be built in Galveston County beginning Friday and going through next Thursday! Part of the pep rally meant listening to a wonderful speaker talk about how we can help the project and how we can go beyond this event to help others so to that end the PALS are supporting this project in many different ways. All jobsite volunteers must be over 18 years of age (and the construction company working on this project is run by a 2005 SFHS graduate, Patrick Henderson). However, there are also numerous other ways to help out: preparing meals or snacks and bringing them to the site, cheering from the spectator area, which is very important for the morale of the workers, and collecting monetary contributions since NO ONE makes money on the construction of the house--it is all done through donations of labor and materials.
In conjunction with the building, Extreme Makeover is hosting a food drive. The SFHS PALS and several others will be at the Big Chief Grocery Store this Saturday, January 9th between 9-11:30 am to collect canned goods and other non-perishable food items, monetary gifts and gift cards to donate to this cause. The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce is also joining in on this exciting venture to provide for this family in our community.
Please check out the Extreme Makeover website for details on other ways that you can help:
